Miracle Swimming or Teen/Adult with Fear in Water swimming classes: Kyndra Smith is now a certified Miracle Swimming Instructor. This course is specifically designed to heal fear of water for the teen and adult swimmer. Did you know that 32% of adults are afraid to put their heads under water? 46% of American adults are afraid in water over their heads in pools and 64% are afraid in deep, open water. (Gallup Poll, 1998) If they’re afraid, they don’t understand how the water works. They often can’t keep themselves from panicking in unforeseen situations. The Miracle Swimming system, a true paradigm shift in teaching, and works for everyone. Comfort and control are taught first. Without this knowledge, learning to swim comfortably and remain at ease in deep water are impossible. You can learn to swim the same way you learned to walk. It can't possibly fail: all your questions are answered and no steps are skipped. The system is gentle, fun, and simple. Heal fear instead of managing it!
For more information on the Miracle Swimming techniquie please visit this website.  Kyndra has been teaching and using this tecnique for the past 5 years and has completed her training and certificaiton with this program this past year.  We are ready now to bring these classes to Gunstock Aquatics.  If you know an adult who would like to heal their fear in water ,please check out THIS website and contact us for a class.

Classroom Treat Idea

Here is an idea to make your classroom birthday treats a bit healthier. Linds recently made chocolate chip cookies for her son's 2nd grade class. While making the cookies she realized she was out of butter so she substituted pinto beans. Yes, I said pinto beans. The best part was the kids didn't notice the difference! These were fun chocolatey birthday treats but with added fiber and protein! Thanks for the idea, Linds!  Go HERE to see the details of her butter to bean substitution.

Geckos On the Move!

In November we began a lunch time program at Laie called Geckos On the Move! Our kids are running around a designated track during lunch time 1-2 times per week.  They get their laps counted on a card and every 3 miles, they earn a toe-token! The kids are really enjoying running and counting their laps! Our goal is to have as many kids as possible run an entire *marathon* (26 miles) over the course of the year! Many are well on their way--we have some serious runners at our school!

We started running the beginning of November, and you won't believe the miles our kids have ran so far!

1st Grade:
Mrs. Elkington's class--60 miles
Mrs. Butterworth's class--52 miles
Mr. Kiyono--39 miles

Fall Play DVD's Still Available
This would make a fun Christmas present for family or friends.  If you want a Voyage of the Dawn Treader DVD, contact Laura Blum at 293-1893.

Students on the BLOG
We are opening up the blog to let kids have a public place to publish their writing and artwork!  Your child will probably be asked by teachers to submit writing.  Please return the parent permission forms that went home.  Ultimately, parents can decide if they want their children to submit works or not.  If your kids want to write and submit their own stories or poems (maybe a fun activity during the break!), they can email submissions to laiebulletin@gmail.com with the subject "BLOG."  Please include the child's name, grade, and teacher, and parent name.

Geckos are ON-THE-MOVE
Thanks to Megan Hughes, Josh Nead, and the BYUH Med-club for initiating our lunch-time Geckos-on-the-Move track program.  The kids are having a blast running around the field.  There are no winners or losers, but there are prizes for everyone.  Did you know some of your kids run over a mile each time we set up the track? They are learning that ANYONE can run, walk, and groove their way around the track and be healthy with their friends.  If there are any other parents who would like to come once a week during lunch (about 11:15am - 12:30pm) and help pass out cards and count laps, email Emily Bradshaw atbradshaw.e@gmail.com.
